Getting School Edition on your iPads
A quick guide for teachers and IT administrators.
Who does what?
If you’re a teacher
App purchasing for school iPads is handled by your IT department or technology coordinator. Your role is to make the request—they’ll handle the rest. We’ve included everything you need to send them below.
If you’re an IT admin
School Edition is available through Apple School Manager, the same way you deploy any other app. The step-by-step details are below.
For teachers: what to send your IT department
Copy and paste the message below, or use it as a starting point. It has everything your IT team needs to find and deploy the app.
Hi,
I’d like to request that Puppet Pals: School Edition be installed on the iPads in my classroom. It’s a one-time purchase app for student storytelling and animation.
It should be available by searching for “Puppet Pals School Edition” in the Apps and Books section of Apple School Manager.
I need it on [number] devices. Let me know if you need anything else from my end.
Thanks!
For IT administrators: step by step
Sign in to Apple School Manager
Go to school.apple.com and sign in with an account that has Administrator or Content Manager privileges.
Go to Apps and Books
In the sidebar, click Apps and Books. This is where you purchase and manage app licenses for your school.
Search for Puppet Pals: School Edition
Search for “Puppet Pals School Edition” and select it from the results. Choose the number of licenses you need (one per device).
Purchase licenses
Complete the purchase using your school’s payment method on file (credit card or purchase order). Licenses are assigned to your school’s location automatically.
Deploy through your MDM
Your MDM (Jamf, Mosyle, Kandji, etc.) will sync with Apple School Manager and pick up the new licenses. Assign the app to the appropriate device group and it will install silently—no action needed from teachers or students.
Good to know
It’s a one-time purchase
No subscription. Buy licenses once and they’re yours. Licenses can be revoked from one device and reassigned to another, which is great for shared iPads or when devices rotate between classrooms.
Students don’t need to do anything
When deployed through your MDM, the app installs silently on managed devices. No App Store sign-in, no download prompts—it just appears, ready to use.
You’ll need an MDM
Apple School Manager handles purchasing, but a Mobile Device Management solution (like Jamf, Mosyle, or Kandji) handles deployment. If your school already manages iPads centrally, you almost certainly have one.
Not on Apple School Manager yet?
Individual licenses can also be purchased directly through the App Store on each device. Apple School Manager is the recommended approach for schools managing multiple iPads, but it’s not the only option.
